What about animals?
VED KATEB KAHO MAT JHOOTHE, JHOOTHA JO NA VEECHARIE,
JO SAB MEH EK KHUDAYE KAHATHO, TO KYON MURGEE MAARE.
– Kabir, Guru Granth Sahib
Kabir’s poetry has enchanted people around the world, his words here from the Guru Granth Sahib encourages us not to be dismissive of the Vedic knowledge but to contemplate it fully. He is aware that if one practises the teachings of the Veda will realise God in all rather than just speak it. A protest on behalf of the divinity within animals which is still valid to this day, if our worldview is that of divinity in all, why do we not work to relieve the suffering as much as possible? We must go beyond our caste, class, creed, even species designations and see the Lord, which is the way of Ahimsa, the paramdharma that is the way to realise what is greatest about humanity.
The river that flows through me and you, flows through the animals too.
